1: TEL TN Newspapers:
While studying organic and locally grown foods, I have noticed the trend to reduce the distance your salad travels to get to your plate. If we eat more locally grown foods, we reduce transportation pollutants. Ran across this article while searching for the project: "
Home plates -- Local chef honors area farmers with dinner prepared with their 'own stuff'"
Commercial Appeal, The (Memphis, TN) - June 11, 2008 Author: Michael Donahue / donahue@commercialappeal.com.
So now I'm wondering if there are places near me in Wilson County that use locally grown or home grown foods. Back to the search.
Pt 2: Volunteer Voices:
I recently read
My Mother the Cheerleader by Robert Sharenow which provides an "insiders" look at segregation in the 9th ward of New Orleans. Many of the teachers I know tiptoe around the issue and won't discuss what it was like attending segregated schools in Nashville. Unfortunately I'm still looking for good primary sources. Any quick hints? I found
an NAACP report from 1966, but I want to find more of the local stories of Wilson County and Nashville. This seems very important in view of the potential rezoning of Nashville schools in 2009-2010.
When I revised my search to put Nashville as a keyword instead of Tennessee as a location, I found more items such as this guide "
Democracy's Hope" This document was noted for it's photographs of segregation, but no mention is made of any attempt to desegregate. How can it be called democracy?
Pt 3: Dr. Mustard with a toothbrush in the classroom (not)

According to this information Dr. Mustard took many photographs as part of the 5 year study. While he advocated for the radical concept of toothbrushing twice a day, there is no photograph of him actually doing the hygiene. It makes sense he'd have a
dental hygienist doing the work with him documenting with photographs.
