Learn & Discover : Navigating the Waters of 2.0 will let you get your feet wet, without drowning you with Tech Talk. See our first lesson in vocabulary and the language of the seas and then jump into the pool of the forums below.

Tell us what your purpose and goals are for learning Web 2.0 skills. Why are you out here on the wild waves?

Maybe you can also share a favorite on-line expression that we missed in this intro activity.

HI, I'm Michelle. I work at Vanderbilt. I will receive my MLIS in one month from UWM-Milwaukee!

I am pretty familiar with Web 2.0 applications, but I figure there is always something new to learn. I am always trying to learn new things.

I enjoy that Web 2.0 has added vocabulary, but I detest the bad grammar and spelling that often flows from using such applications.

Congratulations, Michelle!

I agree with you about the grammar and spelling. At the high school level, one sees the vocab translated into pen to paper writing, and it's a little scary. Years ago, when our son first developed an online presence, I saw him type the word "prolly." Both Steve and I took issue with such misuse and got our point across. But, to prove my point, I hear students say prolly constantly. As Barney Fife says, "Gotta nip it in the bud!"

Max has evolved into something akin to me. I text just as I write and speak...

Yes. I understand that the online world is its own culture, but there is a line to be drawn when you have to literally translate one's communications and a message cannot expressed clearly. Still, I felt obligated to include LOLCatz in our list. I can't ignore that it exists and my fellows are using it.

I guess because I've spent so many years being trained in proper grammar (my AP English teacher in high school was affectionately known as the Grammar Nazi), it's fun to let loose and relax online and in my personal life. ;) I drive my husband crazy talking in LOLspeak/l33tspeak. My favorite is 'srsly'. A recent addition to my vocabulary is 'oh teh noes'. I said that to a friend this weekend and she was all, 'um, what about your nose?' LOL.

I'm Jodie, a Systems Librarian at Vanderbilt. I've been around since last year and I'll be helping with a couple of lessons in Round 2!

Hey Michelle ...my name is Michelle and I graduated last May from UWM-Milwaukee!! :) Go Badgers! hahah (that is their mascot and I just randomly know that from a class).

Well UIW-Milwaukee are Panthers. UW-Madison are Badgers. So Go Panthers.

We seem to have a lot in common.

Hello, I completed the first Learn & Discover a few weeks ago, and I'm excited to continue with a second part! My purpose for learning Web 2.0 skills...well, I already know some things, but there are still things I don't get. Take Twitter for instance. I signed up about a year ago, and I still don't get RT, Hashtags, etc... It drives me crazy when I see a Tweet with all kinds of stuff in it like (for example).... @kdfdkfj, RT @349834 OMG WOW #laskdja

I mean, really??

So, I'm hoping to gain a better understanding of Twitter through all this, although I can honestly say sometimes I think about cancelling my account because I just don't get it.

LOL Cats is my absolute favorite so I am glad you are including that :-)

I enjoy my Twitter account, Alison, for this reason. I follow school library professionals by using TwitterFox (a Firefox add-on) and, in doing so, glean tons of professional insight that I would not have known about without reading tons of blogs. It keeps me abreast of what's new and exciting on the school library scene. I love it!

Oh, I am not a tweeter, but have been known to re-tweet. ;-)

Hey, you're giving us a great sneak peek of Twitter week! ;) TwitterFox is on my list of Twitter apps to share in the lesson - I've been using it for a long time now!

I'm sure Jodie will answer this question later, but is TwitterFox a special kind of TweetDeck?

Reply to This

Twitterfox is an addon for Firefox, so it's not a stand-alone app like TweetDeck. Not as fully featured, but it's right there in my face while I'm surfing the web...

It's just enough, imho. ;-)
