Audio books are a great way to pass the time! I love listening in the car; I don't mind sitting in traffic quite as much if I have something good to listen to.
As a family, we would listen to Paulsen & other books; we had to make fewer pitstops in the middle of an adventure or mystery book. When NPL started offering downloadable books, I had to get an MP3 player. It's amazing how much further I walked. I confess that this past summer, I went Zen & attempted to stay in the moment.
My husband and i use audio books on long car trips too, although it can be tough to find something we both like that neither one of us has heard before.
I think I actually did this one last year, but I did it again, since it's now possible to download from READS to my iPod, and I wanted to try it. I did have some difficulties, but it was my hardware that was the problem--not the READS software. I hadn't used my iPod lately, so the battery was totally dead, and I had to charge it up enough to get my computer to see it. i had to download the audiobooks I chose to my PC, then I transferred them to my iPod. I should have been able to transfer straight to the iPod, but I couldn't. I might try again when the iPod has a full charge. I chose three audiobooks--two short ones, and a full-length novel. the two short ones downloaded fine, and I have listened to one of them. The longer one didn't want to transfer to the iPod. I'll try again later.
I'm not really into audiobooks, not because I don't think of them as reading--in fact, I do--but because I don't have a good time to use them. My commute to work is very short, and I while I sometimes listen to music at work, I can't really concentrate on a story while cataloging. But tonight I listened to "A Child's Christmas in Wales" read by Dylan Thomas, and it was such a treat that I'm thinking I might look for other such things. I'd like to try to find more poetry, so I'll have to browse the READS selections again. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to make this discovery!
It was fun looking at the selection that overdrive has. The only problem I had was once I downloaded the book I had a little trouble finding where it had downloaded on my computer. I did find it finally. Ha. Ha.
I used the Memphis Public Library to download Overdrive and check out an ebook. The library has a good selection of ebooks, allowing up to 3 to be checked out at one time. Although it was an easy process, I personally do not think I would use it very often. I listen to music while driving or exercising. Plus nothing can beat a real book for me - I am one of those diehards that will always prefer a hard copy of a book to an audio or electronic one.
