I'm a big fan of Adobe Photoshop - and an even bigger fan of the $600-dollars-less, legally free, open source program The GIMP - but I'm very pleased with the range of editing tools and effects that are available through Picnik. Yay online applications!
I have always been a big fan of open source stuff. The Gimp is great. (My old photoshop is vesiorn 4! Alot of the free stuff does as well.) There is a lot to be said for not having to download software, though. That's what I like about Web based applications (in addition to price.)
Oh, thank you James and everyone else at TENN-SHARE! I love to caption and play with my pictures. I already had a flickr account, but had no way to edit the pictures except when I was at my home computer with a stupid, mostly useless editing program. I love Picnik. My flickr account was easy to add, and the editing processes was painless. There are soo many fonts to choose from, what fun! I'm a caption fanatic. I see so many possibilities for all my 100x100 icons!
Keep an eye out - you'll be seeing a lot more photos from me!
